My sweet friend and doctor wanted to order a CA-125 lab test ASAP. I have worked in the lab industry for almost 12 years and I have some knowledge about testing for ovarian malignancy risk so I suggested that she order the ROMA (Risk of Ovarian Malignancy Algorithm) test, which is a CA-125 plus HE4, which gives you the ROMA calculation.
On Feburary 1st, 2022 we received the results of my CA-125 which was 26.8, within normal range. This was great news, or so I thought at the time. Although that # was normal, I would still need surgery to remove the adnexal mass. I was scheduled for an appointment and ultrasound with my friend (and new GYN doctor BTW) on February 2nd. At the appointment she confirmed the mass and she set me up for surgery the following week.
On February 3rd I received the results for my HE4 and ROMA testing...it was not good. My HE4 was abnormal (82.8) and my ROMA (premenopausal) was also abnormal (2.17)...which meant it was very likely that my adnexal mass was cancerous. When I read over these results my body got numb. I let my doctor know and she immediately responded that she was going to call the head of GYN oncology on his cell. I knew that meant this was not the news we had hoped for and I was very, very scared.
